Current assessments indicate that butterflies in the UK are facing significant challenges, with one-third of species under threat and three-quarters experiencing a decline. The act of recording butterfly sightings is essential for the conservation of these remarkable insects. The iRecord Butterflies app, developed collaboratively by Butterfly Conservation and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, aims to facilitate the identification of butterfly species and the submission of sightings via iRecord, contributing to their protection and that of their habitats.

The app harnesses your geographical location and seasonal data to assist with butterfly identification, prioritizing those species you are most likely to encounter. It features comprehensive galleries of color photographs representing all UK butterflies throughout their life cycles and offers guidance for distinguishing between challenging species. Users can record individual sightings or compile lists of diverse species observed during visits to specific locations.

To date, more than half a million sightings have been documented through the iRecord Butterflies app, providing invaluable data for scientists and conservationists. This information is instrumental in analyzing the shifting status of UK butterflies over time. Your contributions play a pivotal role in enhancing our understanding of the factors contributing to their decline and will help shape targeted conservation initiatives aimed at safeguarding at-risk species.
